Mit dem Jahr 2026 ist ASoP Europe in seinem vierten Jahr.

With the year 2026, ASoP Europe entered its fourth year.

Hintergrund:

Der kulturelle Reichtum und das kulturelle Ansehen Österreichs in der Welt rühren zu einem Gutteil von seiner internationalen Vernetzung her. Österreich ist ein Land und will es auch sein, das begabten Menschen aus verschiedensten künstlerischen Disziplinen und Herkunftsländern geistige und physische Heimat gibt.

In der gegenwärtigen krisenhaften Situation brauchen Künstler:innen aus den östlichen Teilen Europas mehr denn je unsere Hilfe.

Viele der talentiertesten Menschen sind heute mit dem Verlust ihrer Existenz konfrontiert. Sie können künstlerische Freiheit im eigenen Land nicht mehr leben. In einer Atmosphäre unerträglicher geistiger Enge, der Überwachung, Zensur und Denunzierung ist dies unmöglich. In den direkt vom Krieg betroffenen Gebieten besteht für die Künstler:innen unmittelbare Gefahr für Leib und Leben.

Österreich will mit Hilfe seiner Auslandskulturpolitik hier ganz konkret Beistand für Künstler:innen leisten und berufliche Perspektiven schaffen.

Österreich kann hierbei auf eine jahrzehntelange, erfolgreiche Arbeit verweisen. Als Referenz darf die Tätigkeit des späteren Generaldirektors der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek, Dr. Johann Marte, gelten. Er war in den späten 1970er Jahren als österreichischer Kulturattaché in Moskau eine maßgebliche Kontaktperson für russische Intellektuelle, Schriftsteller:innen und Künstler:innen. In dieser Funktion gelang es ihm sogar verbotene Literatur in den Westen zu retten. Überdies war er der spiritus rector für die

In dieser Tradition versteht sich das vorliegende Projekt.

Grundsätze des Programms:

• Europäisch: Ein Programm von und für Europäer:innen. Europa ist größer als die Europäische Union und Europa brennt wieder. Den aus den Umbruchs- und Krisenregionen stammenden Künstler:innen ist dieses Programm unter österreichischem Lead zugedacht.

• Talente fördern und Europa damit reicher machen: Der Reichtum einer Region besteht maßgeblich auch aus der Fülle ihrer Talente. Mit diesem Programm möchten wir dazu beitragen, dass Talente nicht verloren gehen, sondern dem europäischen Raum über die gegenwärtige Krise hinaus erhalten bleiben.

• Momentum nützen: Gerade in stürmischen Zeiten gilt es nachhaltige und tragfähige Beziehungen zu knüpfen. Es steht dem Kulturland Österreich wohl an, in diesem spezifischen Moment seine Brückenfunktion zwischen West- und Osteuropa weiter auszuüben und sein Engagement in diesem Bereich der Menschenrechte, gerade auch durch Initiativen wie ASoP, mit Leben zu erfüllen.

Background:

Austria’s cultural wealth and reputation in the world are due in large part to its international network. Austria is and wants to be a country that provides a spiritual and physical home to talented people from a wide range of artistic disciplines and countries of origin.

In the current crisis-ridden situation, artists from the eastern parts of Europe need our help more than ever.

Many of the most talented people today are confronted with the loss of their livelihoods. They can no longer live in artistic freedom in their own country. This has become impossible in an atmosphere of unbearable mental confinement, surveillance, censorship and denunciation. In the areas directly affected by the war, artists face immediate danger to life.

Through its foreign cultural policy, Austria wants to provide concrete support for artists and create career prospects.

Austria can point to decades of successful work in this area. The work of the future Director General of the Austrian National Library, Dr. Johann Marte, can serve as a reference. As Austrian cultural attaché in Moscow in the late 1970s, he was a key contact for Russian intellectuals, writers and artists. In this role, he even managed to bring banned literature to the West. He was also the guiding spirit for the establishment of the Austrian reading room in Krakow (1986), which became an important place for encounters with Western literature and culture, and the starting point for a network of over 50 Austria libraries with a focus on Eastern Europe.

The present project is part of this tradition.

Principles of the program:

• European: A program by and for Europeans. Europe is bigger than the European Union and Europe is on fire again. This Austrian-led program is intended for artists from regions in transition and crisis.

• Promoting talent and making Europe
richer: The wealth of a region is largely due to the wealth of its talent. With this program, we want to help ensure that talents are not lost, but are retained in the European region beyond the current crisis.

• Seize the momentum: Especially in turbulent times, we have to establish sustainable and viable relationships. At this moment in time, Austria as a cultural country would do well to continue to act as a bridge between Western and Eastern Europe and to breathe life into its commitment in this area of human rights, especially through initiatives such as ASoP.
