„Ich war im Januar und Februar 2024 im MuseumsQuartier in Wien zu Gast. Zunächst einmal möchte ich mich ganz herzlich für die Einladung und diese wunderbare Gelegenheit bedanken.

Während meines Aufenthalts habe ich an dem Stickprojekt „The Mother of Flowers“ gearbeitet. Ich habe es 2023 in Weißrussland begonnen und 2024 in Wien fertiggestellt. Diese Arbeit ist für mich sehr wichtig, da sie Teil der Ausstellung „The Breath of a House is the Sound of Voices Within“ in der Akademie der Künste in Berlin war (und immer noch ist).

Hier eine kurze Beschreibung des Konzepts meiner Arbeit:

„Im August 2020 gingen Frauen in weißen Kleidern und mit Blumen in den Händen auf die Straßen von Belarus, um gegen die Gewalt und Lügen der Regierung zu protestieren. Die erste Aktion fand spontan auf dem Marktplatz in Minsk statt. Es bildete sich eine starke, solide Gruppe weiblicher Energie. Dieses Ereignis wurde zu einem Symbol des gewaltfreien Widerstands und wiederholte sich bis zum Ende des Jahres wöchentlich in unterschiedlicher Form. So wurde die Blume zu einem Symbol der Konfrontation.

Die Beschwörung der kulturellen Tradition der Stickerei ist für moderne Frauen eine Möglichkeit, sich zur aktuellen Regierungsagenda in Belarus zu äußern. Zu den Traditionen, die aus der belarussischen Kultur unweigerlich verschwunden sind, gehört die Herstellung von selbstgewebten Bettdecken und Teppichen, die mit dem allmählichen Verschwinden der Heimwebstühle praktisch ausgestorben sind. Dennoch ist die Symbolik des Webens erhalten geblieben: Die Künstler:in und eine Gruppe von Frauen fungieren als Träger:innen des kulturellen Codes, die diese Symbolik in ihrem gemeinsamen Stickritual bewahren.

Am Ende des Aufenthalts richteten das Team und andere MQ-Künstler:innen ein offenes Atelier ein, und ich präsentierte meine Stickereien zum ersten Mal der Öffentlichkeit. Es gab viele gute und wichtige Kritiken und interessante Bekanntschaften für mich.

Ich danke dem gesamten Team noch einmal herzlich für diese wunderbare Gelegenheit und freue mich auf die zukünftige Zusammenarbeit.“

“I was in residence at MuseumsQuartier in Vienna in January and February 2024. First of all, I would like to sincerely thank you for the invitation and this wonderful opportunity.

During my time in the residency, I worked on the embroidery project The Mother of Flowers. I began it in Belarus in 2023 and completed it in Vienna in 2024. This work is very important to me, as it was (and still is) part of the exhibition The Breath of a House is the Sound of Voices Within at the Academy of Arts in Berlin.”

Here is a short description of the concept of my work:

“In August 2020, women dressed in white clothes with flowers in their hands took to the streets of Belarus to protest against government violence and lies. The first action took place spontaneously on the market square in Minsk. A strong, solid body of feminine energy formed. This event became a symbol of nonviolent resistance and was repeated weekly in different forms for the rest of the year. Thus, the flower became a symbol of confrontation.
The invocation of the cultural tradition of embroidery is a way for modern women to comment on the government agenda in Belarus today. Traditions that have inevitably disappeared from Belarusian culture include making homespun bedspreads and carpets, which practically died out with the gradual disappearance of the home loom. Still, the symbolism of weaving has been preserved the artist and a group of women act as bearers of the cultural code who maintain this symbolism in their group embroidery ritual.

At the end of the residency, the team and other MQ artists set up an open studio and I presented my embroidery to the public for the first time. There were a lot of good and important reviews and interesting acquaintances for me.
