Nirgendwo zu sein ist manchmal die einzige Möglichkeit, hier und jetzt zu existieren. Diese Ausstellung geht der Frage nach, was es bedeutet, unter Bedingungen von Entwurzelung, Migration und Stille künstlerisch zu arbeiten. Sie entfaltet sich in einem konzeptuellen Raum, der zugleich leer und erfüllt ist – gefüllt von unausgesprochenen Gedanken, die sich selbst entziehen und dennoch für alle spürbar sind.

Ein solcher Raum, zugleich offen und flüchtig, begegnet auch den Teilnehmer:innen der AiR MQ Residency, wenn sie für kurze Zeit nach Wien kommen: sie tauchen in eine lebendige Kunstszene ein, begegnen neuen Kontexten, bewegen sich im Strom der Ereignisse, schaffen neue Arbeiten – und gehen wieder. Ihre Ausstellung, als Spiegel dieser Erfahrung, stellt die Frage, was sich begreifen lässt, wenn man nur für einen Moment verweilt. NOWHERE verweist zugleich auf die kulturelle Situation in den Herkunftsländern der drei teilnehmenden Künstler:innen, wo die Freiheit des künstlerischen Ausdrucks oft nur „nirgendwo“ existiert – oder in den flüchtigen, fragilen Räumen eines „hier und jetzt“.

To be nowhere is sometimes the only way to exist here and now. This exhibition explores what it means to create in the situation of displacement, transition and silence. It evolves through a space that is empty and full at the same time — charged with unspoken thoughts and meanings detached from themselves and yet sensed by everyone.

Such a space, at once empty and full, is where the participants of the AiR MQ Residency find themselves upon coming to Vienna: they step onto an open art scene, get to know unfamiliar contexts, jump into the flow of events, create new artworks . Their exhibition, reflecting on the residency itself, raises questions about what one can feel through and grasp when they stop by only for a short time. ‘Nowhere’ also refers to the cultural condition of the three participating artists’ home countries, where the freedom to create often exists only nowhere, or within instant fluid spaces of a here and now.
