Unsere ASoP Stipendiat:in bewegt sich in einem Feld von Dokumentarfilm und zeitgenössischer Kunst. Die Künstler:in greift in ihrer Arbeit gerne auf historische „Mikro-Geschichten“ zurück. Das sind Geschichten menschlicher Erfahrungen, aus denen die Künstler:in Rückschlüsse auf größere historische, politische, soziale und ökonomische Zusammenhänge zieht.

Ihren dreimonatigen Aufenthalt in Wien nutzte die ASoP Stipendiat:in zur Arbeit an ihrem neuen Dokumentarfilm „Ashes That Settle in Layers on the Surface“ über ihren Heimatort Mariupol. Der Film erzählt die vielschichtige Geschichte des Aufstiegs und der zerstörerischen Folgen des Totalitarismus anhand persönlicher Berichte aus drei Generationen der Familie der Künstler:in. Sie alle haben in der Stadt Mariupol gelebt und gearbeitet.

Zu Helden will die Künstler:in die menschlichen Akteure ihres Films dabei nicht stilisieren, da gerade im sowjetischen Totalitarismus nichts Individuelles heldenhaft erscheinen durfte. Held ist stattdessen das Stahlwerk Asowstal, der mächtige Industriebetrieb der Stadt. Seine nie schlafenden Hochöfen waren und sind ein Symbol eines totalitären Systems, das mit der Sowjetunion geschaffen wurde. Wie ein Krematorium verzehrt es Menschen und verwandelt sie in Asche.

Im April 2022 erhielt diese Metapher eine neue, schreckliche Dimension, als die Leichen der bei Luftangriffen in Mariupol Getöteten nach der Besetzung der Stadt hier Tag und Nacht verbrannt wurden.

Auf der Flucht aus der Ukraine gelang es, digitales und analoges Familienarchiv der Künstler:in zu retten, samt den Briefen ihrer Großmutter und den Tagebüchern ihrer Mutter. Dieses Material bildete den Ausgangspunkt für den Film, an dem die Künstler:in in Wien weiterarbeitete.

The ASoP Fellow works at the intersection of documentary film and contemporary art. In her practice, the artist frequently draws on historical “micro-stories” — narratives of individual human experiences from which she derives insights into broader historical, political, social, and economic contexts.

The ASoP Fellow used her three-month stay in Vienna to work on her new documentary film Ashes That Settle in Layers on the Surface about her hometown of Mariupol. The film tells a multilayered story of the rise and destructive consequences of totalitarianism through the personal accounts of three generations of the artist’s family. All of them lived and worked in the city of Mariupol.

The artist does not seek to portray the human protagonists of her film as heroes, as under Soviet totalitarianism nothing individual was allowed to appear heroic. Instead, the Azovstal steelworks — the city’s mighty industrial complex — becomes the hero. Its never-sleeping blast furnaces were and remain a symbol of a totalitarian system created by the Soviet Union. Like a crematorium, it consumes people, turning them into ashes.

In April 2022, this metaphor took on a new and terrible dimension when, following the occupation of the city, the bodies of those killed in air raids in Mariupol were burned there day and night.

While fleeing Ukraine, the artist managed to save her digital and analogue family archive, including her grandmother’s letters and her mother’s diaries. This material became the starting point for the film, which the artist continued to work on in Vienna.
