Das Fürstentum Liechtenstein beschenkte uns durch die so rasch abgeschlossene Kooperation quasi mit dem Prototypen für unser Projekt, indem es die Residency schon ermöglichte, als bei uns im BMEIA das Bewilligungsprozedere noch im Gang war. Diese Art der Kooperation erscheint uns besonders erfreulich. ASoP Europe ist als europäisches Projekt gedacht und kann daher durchaus auch in einem befreundeten Partnerland wie dem Fürstentum Liechtenstein beginnen.

Die Künstler:in nützte den liechtensteinischen Aufenthalt für eine große neue Arbeit, „Weiden und Pappeln“, ein multimediales Projekt bestehend aus 13 Fotocollagen und jeweils dazugehörigen Texten.

In seinen Texten verwendet der ukrainische Dichter Wassyl Symonenko (geb. 1935) Lerchen und Pappeln als Symbole ukrainischer Identität. Mit den Bildern dieser beiden Baumarten machte sich die ASoP Stipendiat:in auf die Suche nach ukrainischen Landsleuten, die mit der Invasion Russlands nach Liechtenstein geflüchtet waren. Mit dreizehn dieser Personen führte die Künstler:in Gespräche über deren Gründe, die Heimat zu verlassen, sowie über ihre gegenwärtige Lebenssituation, Ängste und Hoffnungen. Zudem porträtierte sie die Interviewten fotografisch. In den Collagen sind deren Köpfe durch Weiden und Pappeln ersetzt. Dahinter steht der Gedanke, dass diese Menschen – so verschieden und so schwierig ihre individuellen Lebenssituationen auch sein mögen – ein Stück gemeinsamer Identität bilden.

(Artists Solidarity Program Europe – ASoP) realisiert.

Das Projekt wurde als Teil des künstlerischen Programms am österreichischen Pavillion bei der Weltausstellung in Osaka 2024 für einen Monat lang gezeigt.

Through this swiftly concluded cooperation, the Principality of Liechtenstein gifted us with the prototype for our project by making a residency possible while the approval process was still underway at the MFA. We are particularly pleased with this type of cooperation. ASoP Europe is conceived as a European project and can therefore also begin in a friendly partner country such as the Principality of Liechtenstein.

It was the Ambassador of Liechtenstein in Vienna, H.S.H. Maria-Pia Kothbauer, who listened to the two organizers of ASoP Europe and suggested a partnership to the Office for Cultural Affairs of her country.

From April to July, a Ukrainian artist was welcomed to Liechtenstein with a generous monthly grant from the Principality.

The artist used the Liechtenstein residency to create a major new work, “Willows and Poplars,” a multimedia project consisting of thirteen photo collages and accompanying texts.

In his texts, the Ukrainian poet Wassyl Symonenko (born 1935) uses larches and poplars as symbols of Ukrainian identity. Using images of these two tree species, ASoP fellow set out in search of Ukrainian compatriots who had fled to Liechtenstein following Russia’s invasion. The artist spoke with thirteen of these people about their reasons for leaving their homeland and about their current living situations, hopes, and fears. She also photographed the interviewees. In the collages, their heads are replaced by willows and poplars. The idea behind this is that these people, as different and as difficult as their individual life situations may be, form a shared sense of identity.

The project was shown as part of the offical art program at the Austrian pavilion at the World Exhibition in Osaka 2024 for the duration of one month.
